Wednesday Word – Plunder

This weeks’ word is plunder. It is an English verb meaning ‘to pillage; to rob; to strip; to take by force; to steal’. Plunder is derived from the German word plündern or the Dutch word plunderen.

Plunder came into the English language in the early 1600s during the Thirty Years War. The first known use of the word as a verb (‘to take goods by force’) was in 1632. It can also be used as a noun – ‘the act of plundering; something taken by force’. It was first used as a noun in 1643.
