Wednesday Word – Eschew

‘Eschew’ is our Wednesday Word for this week. It is an English word that is defined as ‘to abstain or keep away from; shun’ and was first used in the early 1300s.

The current form of the word comes from the Old English eschewen, which was derived from the French eschiver. Eschiver was in turn derived from the German word eschever, which came from the Old High German sciuhen, meaning ‘to frighten off’. It is also related to the current German word meaning ‘shy’, scheuchen.
